How to tell the difference between real and fake amber?
- Drip a drop of alcohol over the surface of your piece. If the surface becomes sticky, chances are it’s copal, the most common amber imitation. Be careful since, with prolonged exposure, alcohol can stain natural amber.
- Drop amber in salt water (8 to 10 teaspoons of salt per glass of water). Genuine amber has a very low density, so it will float at the top while most fakes will sink.
How to care for amber?
In a clear glass, dilute a tablespoon of salt in half a glass of water and place your amber in the direct sunlight for 5-6 hours. Then rinse with running water.
