Proper support of the baby’s back is one of the key principles of babywearing. A baby’s spine develops gradually during the first year, so it is important that the carrier supports the baby’s natural position at every stage.
In the first months, the baby’s back is naturally curved and requires full support – from the tailbone to the base of the neck. The carrier should provide even, close support without forcing the spine to straighten and without creating pressure points.
As the baby grows and develops (gaining head control, sitting independently, and later standing), they gain more control over their body, but still need appropriate support, especially during sleep.
It is important to note: a carrier that forces the baby’s back into a straight position at an early stage may not match the natural structure of their body. It is preferable to choose a carrier that allows the back to remain in its natural, rounded position.
Throughout all stages, the carrier should match the baby’s developmental stage and provide natural, supportive, and flexible support.
