Can a baby carrier be used with premature babies?

A baby carrier can be a meaningful tool for premature babies and their caregivers, especially during the challenging early stages.

During babywearing, the baby’s body is held close to the caregiver’s body. This direct contact provides important stimulation and supports vital processes: the baby senses the caregiver’s heartbeat, breathing rhythm, and body warmth. In this sense, the carrier can serve as a kind of ״external womb״ offering a sense of security and closeness.

Many studies show that skin-to-skin carrying supports the development and regulation of premature babies. In fact, this approach has a name ״kangaroo care״ and is widely used in hospitals and neonatal units around the world.

At the same time, it is important to remember that premature babies are a particularly sensitive population, and therefore require careful and safe babywearing:

  • Do not carry a baby weighing less than 2 kg (at this stage, skin-to-skin contact in a reclined position with appropriate support is recommended)
  • The face and head must remain visible at all times
  • Airways must remain open and unobstructed
  • The carrier should provide firm and precise support along the entire spine
  • The legs should be positioned outside the carrier
  • Ensure the baby can be removed quickly and safely if needed

Due to the sensitivity and complexity, we strongly recommend receiving personal guidance from a certified babywearing educator. Professional support helps ensure that carrying is adapted safely and accurately to the unique needs of both the baby and the caregiver.
